Celebrating Autism Awareness Day

Autism Awareness Day is day to shine a light on autism and open up conversations to make our society more inclusive for the future of our neurodiverse children.

What is Autism?

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by differences in communication, social interaction, and behaviour. It is a spectrum, ranging from individuals with exceptional talents and abilities to those who require more support in their daily lives.

Key Characteristics of Autism

  • Communication Differences: Individuals with autism may have challenges in verbal and nonverbal communication. They may have difficulty understanding social cues, maintaining eye contact, or engaging in conversations.

  • Social Interaction Challenges: Building and maintaining relationships can be challenging for individuals with autism. They may struggle with understanding social norms, expressing empathy, or interpreting others' emotions.

  • Sensory Sensitivities: Many individuals with autism experience sensory sensitivities, such as heightened sensitivity to light, sound, touch, or taste. These sensitivities can impact their daily experiences and may lead to sensory overload or meltdowns.

Creating a more inclusive society for children with autism

Creating a more inclusive society for children with autism involves exploring changes in areas including education, employment, healthcare, and social attitudes. Here are some specific steps that can be taken to create a more inclusive environment for children:

  • Inclusive Education: Create learning environments in schools that cater to diverse needs, providing additional support staff, accommodations, and specialized instruction.

  • Peer Education and Awareness: Educate students about autism to encourage empathy and understanding, promoting a culture of acceptance and respect in schools.

  • Family Support Services: Offer comprehensive support services and resources to families, including training, counselling, and access to community resources.

  • Transition Planning: Assist in planning for the transition to adulthood, providing guidance and resources for vocational training, independent living, and post-secondary education or employment opportunities.

Mindfulness for Neurodiversity: How can it help?

Mindfulness practices can help kids regulate their emotions, manage sensory sensitivities, and enhance social skills - It provides a range of coping strategies that empower children to navigate life's challenges with resilience and calm. Furthermore, practicing mindfulness exercises regularly can also help support children that suffer from anxiety, low self esteem, and other mental health issues.

How the Stix Mindfulness Programme Supports Children with Autism

Breathing techniques to use in everyday life.

  • We’ve designed 3 interactive breathing activities that teach techniques that can support autistic children with strategies to prevent meltdowns, and manage situations that may be causing sensory overload.

Activities that teach ways to identify and manage emotions

  • Understanding each emotion and why it can arise is a key way of learning how to deal with them when they eventually arise in real life, and is key to support emotional regulation. Rainbow Painting & Bubble Popping are our two most played activities by children, teaching them how to identify emotions and how to let negative thoughts and feelings disappear.

Learning the basics of compassion, gratitude, and appreciation

  • Children with autism can often struggle expressing empathy, therefore, teaching them about compassion, gratitude and appreciation is a great way to support their emotional development.

April is a month to celebrate autism and neurodiversity as a whole, and to shine light on different ways we can support children as they grow to make our world more inclusive.

To celebrate Autism Awareness Month, we're offering families 10% off the Stix Remotes with code CELEBRATE.
